چکیده

The Charales (stoneworts) are an ancient monophyletic group with conserved features same in ancesters as well as in present representatives. They are considered to be closely related to the ancestors of land plants. The taxonomy of Charales was delimitated on the basis of morphology and later by fossil characters as well. Nowadays, the higher taxa are relatively well defined and their delimitation is supported by molecular analyses. However, the situation is more problematic at subgeneric levels. The appearance often depends on the environmental conditions that can produce broad morphological variation. The last report on Charales in Bohemia was a checklist of taxa and their distribution along with ecological requirements (vilhelm 1914). Although about the research history and the species diversity in Bohemia from the 19th century are well recorded, there is little information from the 18th and 20th centuries. We have compiled here all historical and current data about the distribution of all members of Charales in the Czech Republic along with information on their ecological preferences. This paper presents a list of 26 species of the four genera of charophytes found in waters of the Czech Republic. The species have been distributed in over 1000 localities.

Transcriptome Profiling of the Green Alga Spirogyra pratensis (Charophyta) Suggests an Ancestral Role for Ethylene in Cell Wall Metabolism, Photosynthesis, and Abiotic Stress Responses.

It is well known that ethylene regulates a diverse set of developmental and stress-related processes in angiosperms, yet its roles in early-diverging embryophytes and algae are poorly understood. Recently, it was shown that ethylene functions as a hormone in the charophyte green alga Spirogyra pratensis Since land plants evolved from charophytes, this implies conservation of ethylene as a hormo...

Phylogenetic Position of Zygogonium Ericetorum (zygnematophyceae, Charophyta) from a High Alpine Habitat and Ultrastructural Characterization of Unusual Aplanospores

Characeae (Charophyceae, Charophyta) contains two tribes with six genera: tribe Chareae with four genera and tribe Nitelleae, which includes Tolypella and Nitella. This paper uses molecular and morphological data to elucidate the phylogeny of Tolypella species in North America. In the most comprehensive taxonomic treatment of Characeae, 16 Tolypella species worldwide were subsumed into two spec...

Trachelomonas bituricensis var. lotharingia M.L. Poucques 1952, a morphologically interesting, rare euglenoid new to the algal flora of the Czech Republic.

This report describes the discovery of the rare euglenoid taxon Trachelomonas bituricensis var. lotharingia in a small mesotrophic pond in the Czech Republic. Only limited data are available on the distribution of this taxon as same as for typical variety of Trachelomonas bituricensis, even though this taxon is morphologically very well defined. I provide a brief discussion of the taxonomic val...

Charophytes: Evolutionary Giants and Emerging Model Organisms

Charophytes are the group of green algae whose ancestral lineage gave rise to land plants in what resulted in a profoundly transformative event in the natural history of the planet. Extant charophytes exhibit many features that are similar to those found in land plants and their relatively simple phenotypes make them efficacious organisms for the study of many fundamental biological phenomena. ...
